Republicans Take First Step on Cutting Health Care for Millions to Pay for Tax Breaks for Wealthy Households

GOP budget resolution passes House, kicks off expedited process to slash Medicaid, ACA coverage for working families.

WASHINGTON DC — In response to last night’s vote in the House of Representatives, Health Care for America Now Education Fund (HCANEF) Executive Director Margarida Jorge issued the following statement:

“Last night, the Republicans in Congress followed through on their plan to kickstart cuts to the nation’s biggest health insurance program: Medicaid. But they aren’t stopping there–their budget resolution instructs Congress to cut $1.5 trillion out of ACA (Affordable Care Act) coverage, food assistance, Pell Grants, and other popular programs that working families depend on. The cuts are to offset the massive cost–over $4 trillion–in additional tax breaks for wealthy households and corporate shareholders. If this budget is adopted in its current form, it will increase health care costs and cut health insurance for millions of workers, seniors, kids and people with disabilities who are already struggling to make ends meet in today’s economy.

House Speaker Johnson and President Trump continue to claim that no one will lose coverage or services under the proposal, but cutting $880 billion out of the program will certainly harm patients, hospitals, and health care workers. This process is only beginning and – no matter what promises were made behind closed doors – several Republicans will soon have other opportunities to choose whether to stand by their public commitments to protect Medicaid or vote again to slash health care for tens of thousands of their constituents so that a much smaller number of ultra-rich constituents continue to receive tax breaks under the Trump tax law that passed in 2027.  One thing is clear: voters around the country are alarmed about these proposals and the House GOP is on the wrong side of public opinion.”
