The Supreme Court today issued a unanimous decision in the FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine and Danco v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine lawsuit, dismissing the case and rejecting a ban on the commonly used abortion medication drug mifepristone. The court ruling protects access to medication abortion that includes the use of Mifepristone, a safe and effective medication that has been FDA-approved for 24 years and is used in more than half of all abortions in the United States.
Margarida Jorge, Executive Director of Health Care for America Now Education Fund (HCANEF), issued the following statement in response to the SCOTUS decision:
“The Supreme Court’s decision today fundamentally protects access to safe abortion–an essential part of reproductive health care–for millions of people in the country. While we applaud the Court for this common-sense and fair decision, we also heed Justice Kavanaugh’s comments which remind us that the fight to protect abortion access–and other reproductive health needs like contraception and IVF–is far from over. While the plaintiffs in this case were found to lack standing, other anti-abortion activists will take up the baton and continue to pursue bans on abortion through multiple tactics–not just the courts– over the coming years, putting the health, safety, and economic security of American families at continued risk. This fight is far from over.”
